The Cemetery was built in the Year 1833 in name of Queen Maria II. of Portugal, when was the Cholera epidemic in Lisbon. In the first time was it the Cemetery for the people in the West part of Lisbon. After the time of the monarchy 1910, come the first republic of Portugal, the heroes of this time are on the Cemetery of São João was is the biggest Cemetery of Lisbon. It look like a City of graves, similar like the “Cemetery of Prazeres”. 1925 was built the first crematory of Portugal here, but after short time it must closed and opened again in the year 1985. in 1933 it was built the figure for the unknown soldier, also you can find from small graves up to big Mausoleums. Further you have a great view to the River Tejo and the Bridge of “Vasco da Gama”
