The plans for the building were drawn up by the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva. Work began on 6th August 1930. Marques da Silva broke with the traditional forms of church construction in Portugal and based the design heavily on the Art Deco style of the 1930s.
During the construction work, a fire broke out on February 4, 1939, destroying an image of the Virgin Mary and a carving that crowned the high altar.
This delayed the completion of the church, which was consecrated on September 14, 1947, without the architect, who had died three months earlier.
