Coimbra is the Capital of the District of Coimbra and is on the River Mondega. The University City have round about a population of 143`000, 30`000 of them are Student`s. In the time from 1139 until 1256 Coimbra was the 2nd Capital in the History of Portugal. Coimbra was build in the Celtic time. In the imperial time the Romans at this place where Coimbra is now, the build the City with name Aeminium. In the Year of 468 the destroyed the City Conimbriga in the near after this the City Aeminium take the name and the function (Bishop seat).
Between 711 and 1117 the Moors and the Christians had some wars about Coimbra, so it change many many times between the Christians and the Moors.
The Portuguese King Dom Dinis create in the in the Yeah 1290 the University of Coimbra, it is the first University of Portugal and one of the oldest in the World.
Coimbra had serious damage suffered at the Earthquake of 1755. Now Coimbra is one of the most biggest and historic City in Portugal.
